Health tip # 1 : Eat Breakfast Daily

Your mother was right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m sure you’ve heard this before but when it comes to actually sitting for breakfast we are always in a hurry to get to class or to office and end up sacrificing our meal.

Eating a healthy breakfast is linked to many health benefits such as weight loss, improved concentration , lower cholesterol  etc. Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (no, doughnuts are not healthy) can be very beneficial in :

  • Weight Control
  • Improved concentration and performance at work or school
  • Energy boost at the start of your day
  • Ensures you consume the daily quota of nutrients and proteins etc.

How can eating help in weight control ?

Many studies, in both adults and children, have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers.

A theory suggests that eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day. So if you’ve eaten breakfast at around 8 am then your hunger pangs would ideally be controlled and you can make healthier mid day snack and lunch choices.  Another theory behind the breakfast-weight control link implies that eating breakfast is part of a healthy lifestyle that includes making wise food choices and balancing calories with exercise.

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that breakfast-skippers are more likely to have worse cholesterol levels and insulin sensitivity than breakfast-eaters. 

So while you may think skipping breakfast will save you some calories , it actually may lead to eating more during the rest of the day and an unhealthy lifestyle in general.

Of course one must remember that most studies linking breakfast to weight control loss recommend a healthy breakfast comprising of  proteins & whole grains such as Breakfast Cereals . Eggs too are a great source of proteins and should be included in the meal as often as possible.

Breakfast Cereals : Why should one have Breakfast cereals ?

Well the most obvious one is that a cereal ( Muesli,Granola,Corn flakes or Porridge ) contain proteins , carbs and calcium (milk) and are really yummy , easy and quick to make and consume. So it just is more convenient .

However , there are more scientific studies showing that Cereal eaters add to a healthy lifestyle and that they play a key role in maintaining a healthy body weight.

A study found that those who frequently ate breakfast cereal — both refined grain and whole-grain types — consistently weighed less than those who rarely or never ate breakfast cereal. In fact a study revealed that those adults who consumed breakfasts of ready-to-eat cereal were associated with lower BMIs than other, higher-fat breakfast meals.

Eating breakfast can also improve cognitive performance,concentration , test scores and achievement scores in students, especially in younger children. 

So we hope you start taking breakfast most seriously and kick-start your day with a bowl of healthy cereal and honey !
